From Addiction to Redemption: James Krishnan's Inspiring Journey with Teen Challenge (Singapore)

Hi, my name is James Krishnan.  My wife and I have three grown-up children.  In my free time, I enjoy helping my wife to do house work, and occasionally going shopping with her.

 The Downhill Battle

I started smoking cigarettes before national Service at the age of 17.  It began when friends introduced me to smoking but gradually escalated to heavy drinking and drug substances that had been me addicted in no time.  Soon I was heavily addicted to heroin.

I wanted to quit but it was really very difficult for me.  I felt desperate and even contemplated ending my life.  When I was about 40 years old,  someone from SANA (Singapore Anti-Narcotic Association) introduced me to Teen Challenge (Singapore).  I decided to give myself another chance.

The Valley Experience

At Teen Challenge, I had to undergo withdrawal treatment for at least 21 days.  The withdrawal process was incredibly challenging and felt like hell to me.  I felt utterly desperate and hopeless, to the point that I ran away from the centre.

But thank God, the staff accepted me back and I continued with the withdrawal treatment.   I was going through a lot of pain and suffering due to my withdrawal symptoms.

In my desperation, I cried out to God.  I said a very simple prayer “God can you help me?  If you deliver me from this addiction, I will work for you.”  Though I have no idea what this prayer would lead me to, I decided to put my trust in Him.

I slowly overcame addiction through prayer, Bible reading, and the guidance and support from staff of Teen Challenge, especially my mentors,  Rev Peter Misso, Rev Sam Kuna, Bro Dave Chai, Eddie Joseph, and many others brothers.    I successfully completed the one year rehabilitation programme in Teen Challenge which was back in 1996.

The Uphill Journey

After the completion of my programme, I decided to stay and continue to serve as a staff in the ministry.  The staff encouraged me to upgrade myself by attending relevant courses and seminars and I even completed a short term bible school course.

While serving as a Care Worker in the centre, I was also volunteering as a prison counsellor for a season.   The support from the staff and my church pastors and members has helped me in my transformative journey that shaped my character and my passion to help others who were going through the same struggles that had tormented me for many years.

I like to encourage those struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, to trust God, study the Bible, pray and surround themselves with supportive people.  Consider the consequences and think about the impact on their lives and on those dear to them.

Together Let’s Impact Lives

My experience with Teen Challenge (Singapore) and my faith in God have been pivotal in my journey to recovery.  I have dedicated my life for the past 25 years as a staff in serving others and helping them to overcome their struggles.

Together, we can break the cycle of addiction and build a world where everyone has the opportunity to heal, thrive, and contribute positively to society. Join us in this vital mission. Together, we can make a difference.  Support our ministry today at http://TeenChallenge.org.sg

 Thank you.
